:: Currency

The official currency is Kenya shilling and is abbreviated as Ksh. Notes include: 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000.
Coins include: 5, 10, 20 and 40.
The banks and foreign exchange bureaus are the best places to change your money, though some authorized hotels can also change.
Travelers' cheques and credit cards are widely accepted, especially in hotels, shopping malls and restaurants.
When leaving the country, you are advised to change any extra Kenya shillings into foreign currency.
If you intend to carry a lot of Kenya shillings with you, you will need clearance from Government.

 

:: Transport

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Nairobi is only about half hour drive away from the city center but Moi International Airport in Mombasa is situated closer to the city center.
At both airports, there are many taxis but it is advisable to organize for pick by your tour agent for security reasons.
If booked at a hotel in South Coast of Mombasa, allow for extra time to get to your hotel since you have to make use of the ferry.
There is a passenger train departing both Nairobi and Mombasa three times in a week.

 

:: Population

Kenya covers an area of 582,644 sq kms with a total population of about 30 million people.

 

:: Working days

Official working days in Kenya are from Monday to Friday, with some businesses opening on Saturdays.
Official working hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with a lunch break at 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm; but you will find some businesses working beyond these hours.
Major banks open between 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, with manned 24-hour ATM services.
Foreign exchange bureaus at the airport operate 24 hours.

 

:: Public holidays

January 1 - New Year's Day
February/March - Idd il Fitr (Muslims holiday that depends on sighting of the moon)
March/April - Easter Monday and Easter Friday (varies from year to year)
May 1 - Labour Day
June 1 - Madaraka Day
October 10 - Moi Day
October 20 - Kenyatta Day
December 12 - Jamuhuri Day
December 25 - Christmas Day
December 26 - Boxing Day
If a holiday falls on Sunday, then the following Monday is normally declared a holiday.

 

:: Communication

There is a good network of telephone, cellular and satellite connections in Kenya currently.
Most hotels have adequate telecommunications services that include telephone services, fax and Internet.
International newspapers and magazines are widely available in Kenya.
In many of the bigger hotels/lodges, there are Digital Satellite Televisions that offer a wide range of television channels to choose from.
Cost of posting letters and parcels depends on weight and destination.
This is only done at the post office where you will also be able to buy postage stamps.
The Kenya country telephone code is 254+ followed by the area code of where you are calling.

 

:: Health

It is important to take necessary inoculations depending on your travel plans.
Your Medical doctor should be able to provide you with this information well in advance.
It is recommended that you take anti malaria medications during and after your trip.
Yellow fever certificate is required for transit in many African countries.
It is advisable to carry with you a medical kit with basic remedies for allergies, insect bites, pain, sunburns, mosquito repellants etc.
Major hotels and lodges have a medical officer on call.
There are well-equipped hospitals in the major towns in Kenya.

 

:: Electricity

The electricity supply in Kenya is 220/240 volts and the plugs are 3 points square.
As such, it is important to carry appropriate plugs and adaptors for your electrical equipment.

 

:: Packing

This will depend on your destination and time of travel.
Seek advice before hand, otherwise just vary your clothing i.e. warm clothes as well as light ones.
Comfortable walking shoes are ideal for all safaris.
Avoid carrying a lot of luggage unless it is extremely necessary.
It is advisable that you carry personal items like torches, pocketknives, corkscrews, sunglasses etc.

 

:: Climate

Kenya's 75% land is considered arid or semi-arid with only 25% being arable.
Inland rainfall and temperatures are closely related to altitude.
The Coast region is normally warm and humid; the Northern region is usually hot and dry while the Central region is cool and humid.
Throughout the country rainfall is seasonal and varies from place to place in terms of quantity and timing.
You will be advised on what to expect depending on your itinerary.
