Kenya occupies a total area of 582,644 sq. km and straddles

The Great Wildebeest Migration, considered to be one of

place between the Maasai Mara on one side and the Serengeti

GEOGRAPHY
& CLIMATE
The country of Kenya is just over 580,000sq km and contains
most of the world's major climatic conditions. Kenyans
topography is a study of contrasts. Features range from
deserts to snow capped mountains, sandy coastlines to
freshwater lakes, savannah grasslands to fertile agricultural
plantations, extinct volcanoes to coral reefs. The eastern
half of the country slopes gently downward towards sea
level while to the west, the land patterns resemble a
flight of stairs as a series of hills and plateaus alternate
upward to the Rift Valley. On the western side of the
Rift Valley the land again gently slopes downwards towards
lake Victoria. Moving from east to west, a traveller experiences
the white beaches of the Indian Ocean to the mile-high
plateau of Nairobi, climbs higher still to the snow-capped
summit of mount Kenya, then drops across the great Rift
Valley to Lake Victoria. The Kenya countryside boasts
jagged, forested mountains, fertile red soil agricultural
belts in the Rift Valley and dusty desert at L. Turkana.
Kenya lies on the equator and is bordered on the North
by Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania, and Mt. Kilimanjaro are to
the Southern while the Indian Ocean lies in the East.
Kenya
has twenty mountains, six of which rise to over 3000m
9900ft. Mt Kenya the second largest peak in Africa is
the only spot with the snow on the equator.
Most of Kenya's rivers and small lakes dry up during dry
season. Before the formation of the Rift Valley, Kenya's
climate and vegetation could best be characterized as
tropical.

Currency
Kenya's currency is based on the decimal system. The unit
is the Kenya shilling, divided into 100 cents. Coins are
of 10 and 50 cents and shillings 1,5,10,and 20. Notes
are of Kshs50, 100,200,500,1000. There are no restrictions
on the movement of the currency into or out of Kenya for
current transactions. Travellers can bring into or. Take
out of Kenya currency notes up to the equivalent of Kshs
100,000 without making a custom declaration. Currency
notes in excess of the above amounts can still be brought
in or taken out of the country upon making a declaration.
